JP CrossFit – Community Warm-up Sylvia Rivera was a Latina trans woman who fought for the inclusion of transgender folks and other marginalized identities that were not being recognized in the mainstream and middle-class gay liberation movement. She formed her own organization alongside fellow trans activist Marsha P. Johnson called STAR, that focused on providing shelter for queer, homeless youth who were not able to access gay-oriented resources due to their gender identity or presentation, and was involved within the Gay Liberation Front efforts to pass protective bills. JP CrossFit – Community Warm-up (No Measure) Marsha P. Johnson was a Black trans woman who is credited with starting the Stonewall Riots after police raided the gay bar Stonewall Inn. Her bravery in the face of oppression ignited subsequent LGBTQ political activism and is generally considered the start of the modern LGBTQ rights movement. Johnson, along with fellow trans activist Sylvia Rivera, founded STAR, an organization dedicated to helping LGBTQ youth find food, housing, and general safety from violence, especially those who were not able to access gay-oriented resources due to their gender identity or presentation. She was also a part of the Gay Liberation Front which sought to protect citizens against oppressive and discriminatory laws based on sexual orientation.
